i hate computers.
gah…it is just not my MONTH for computers.
I have been working all day on a logo…and Illustrator’s crashed a few times, so I learned early in the day to save often. And just now when I went to save, it crashed again, and guess what? When I try to open the file, it throws some wonky error and the entire layer with my illustrations on it won’t show up at all. I’ve tried opening & importing it into a couple different programs and there’s basically 1 little drawing out of about 20 I had on the page. *cries*
I lost a good 4 hours of work. I hate computers.

I know you said you tried opening it in several programs, but did you try opening it in Flash?
Don’t give up yet, Willo.
Oh, but DO hate computers. It’s actually healthy. :)
yes, of course i did.
Try copying the file and renaming it to name.eps.
If that doesn’t work, I’m outta ideas.
Sorry.
(exits stage right)
thanks brian. no – it was completely corrupt. it threw a huge fit of an error about 4 lines wrong. whatever happened the vector just completely freaked it out on that whole layer (I had another layer that was still in tact & even had the last edit’s save there, too!) That file was wonky, as it was starting to crash more often, but obviously saving isn’t enough. I will so do the versions now – or every once & awhile go into finder & make an archive of it (easiest on mac).
frustrating for sure… but this wasn’t AS bad as the animation I lost 2 weeks back. That’s a lot of keyframing. Today was just sketching out a gazillion different logo ideas, and I was down to a few final ones I liked, so I just had to recreate them essentially. They will never be the same as the original, but oh well! Shit happens & life goes on.
Damn computers! (any other day I praise it and how much I love it… but today… grumble grumble.) Don’t even get me started on how sucky my whole laptop situation is STILL. I’m still on the borrowed G4 from a friend even though I got my PB back… it quickly went right back in the box till I have time to deal w/ it.
Have you ever considered using version control? I’m a developer by trade, and therefore a version control freak. Everything is versioned…that way if the file becomes corrupted at some point and you don’t notice it, you can always get a previous version back (why modern filesystems don’t have this integrated is sort of beyond me).
It’s sometimes a little technical to set up, but it can save a lot of work. You also get a nice history, with comments of your work, you can save milestones, and it frees you up to go in different directions without having to worry about things.
It might be too much setup overhead, but I’d check out subversion (open source + free, and I believe there’s a friendly Mac client out there), or perforce (for pay, but free for single user) are two pretty good ones.
For me, it’s an indispensable tool.
I guess it’s just a bad computer week. Monday morning I found my office machine’s mother board had died and had to transplant the harddrive to a new computer. No problem. THEN… tuesday i worked from home and the ‘puter that i use to access my work vpn kept crashing. The powersupply fan died and the machine would lock up when the cpu temp hit 145 degress. Argh. It’s a fucking sony viao proprietary piece of crap so after going to 8 different computer supply stores I have accepted the fact that noone has a replacement powersupply for it. If anyone has a sony viao atx powersupply, i’m in the market…
thank you rob meyer! i am seriously looking into this stat!
eeek, trevor – sucks! good luck & i feel your pain!
Right under your nose… Version Cue
