Stitching it all together…

This year has brought about some incredible developments… both personally, and in my career. One of my main goals has been to find my sweet spot:

Do what I love + Do what comes easily to me + Get paid well for it = My Sweet Spot
(I have a larger post coming soon all about this. Also, while I’ve been talking about this trifecta for awhile now, my geeky venn diagram deserves a nod to bud cadell’s and eskimon’s.)

The awesome thing is, getting clear on my sweet spot over the last year, I transformed the clients I was attracting into exactly the kind of clients I want to have; doing the work I’m passionate about:

My mission is to support small business owners and creative entrepreneurs to grow their businesses with ease and grace.

In September I started working with a new startup that hired me on for 15 hours a week. I know that may not sound like a lot to you, but I’m often juggling ~6 clients and ~4 other side projects. Quite frankly I wasn’t sure how I was going to manage it.

The great news was that it wasn’t difficult at all, because it was a pure JOY to be working with this team. Hello, sweet spot!

Solo Entrepreneur to Collaborative Entrepreneur
I often describe my Creative Business Consulting as the intersection where ‘Art meets Business meets Tech’. Given my experience as an artist myself – as well as my background in tech and entrepreneurship – I love empowering creative small business owners with the systems and structure to optimize and catalyze success.

Last year I declared I wanted to stop working solo, and instead collaborate on a solution that’s disrupting/game-changing my industry. To this end, I’m proud to announce the grand-fantabulous news:

I’ve joined on as Co-Founder & VP of Marketing at Stitch Labs!

L to R: Andrew (Illustrator/Intern), Michelle (Co-Founder/Designer), Brandon (Founder/CEO/Developer), Jake (Co-Founder/Biz Dev), Willo (Co-Founder/Marketing)

Considering my first reaction after seeing Stitch was, “Why weren’t you around when I started my product line in 2007!?” it was only natural that I sign on to amplify their marketing efforts; shouting the good news from the rooftops, “Finally, there’s a better way!” In the first few months we tripled their traction, I traveled to Baltimore for the Summit of Awesome (a conference dedicated to the business side of craft), and we collaborated on two local speaking events focused on supporting small business owners [1, 2].

Some of you may have seen my posts about Stitch over the last few months. In particular, 5 Things I Learned the Hard Way: Tips on Inventory Management, and more recently our new animated overview video, How Stitch Works (yup, I dug into my old school Flash Animation skills to crank this out):

Note: While most of what you see in the overview video is my illustration and animation, the illustrations of John & Laura, from the Stitch website, are thanks to our talented artist/intern, Andrew.

Moving forward in my new role as Co-Founder & VP of Marketing, I’m excited for the opportunity to continue connecting authentically with our current customers, further develop our branding and communications, and partner with Jake to reach out to the millions of makers and sellers whose businesses can benefit from the unifying power of Stitch.

With my background in Design and UX/UI, I’m able to work with Brandon and our awesome designer, Michelle, to continually refine the usability and effectiveness of our web app.

I’m also really excited to help grow our team, and have a hand in cultivating our company culture. While we all wear many hats, it’s clear that we agree we’re most effective when we work within our strengths. A gospel I’ve been preaching for a while now.

Teamwork Makes the Dream Work (Yes, I just used that)
Going back to the Sweet Spot, I realize this won’t always be easy, nor am I getting paid the big bucks – because hello, it’s a startup – but when I believe in something whole-heartedly, I’m willing to take risks. Dive in. Make it mine. Do whatever it takes. Additionally, I’ve come to realize how much I thrive on collaboration, and it’s been a priority above all else to find synergistic partners.

After being self-employed for so long, I didn’t make this decision lightly, but working with this rockstar team for the last 4 months has given us the opportunity to see how well we work together. It’s been heartwarming and inspiring to witness the level of humility, communication, and mutual respect; not to mention the wicked talent and ability to iterate fast–one of the keys to startup success!

In just the last few months we’ve received unbelievable press coverage, blog support, launched Etsy integration, and continue to move at a lightning fast pace. Exciting times!

I’m beyond thrilled to be a part of the Stitch Labs team, developing a solution that’s revolutionizing inventory management and helping so many awesome, independent creatives. And the best part is… this is only the beginning.

Come say hello to @StitchLabs on Twitter, join us on Facebook and tell your maker, mover & shaker friends about Stitch!

Thanks for reading, and for all of your awesome love and support.

My Favorite Rdio Playlist at the Moment

I’m so in love with this playlist right now (thanks Malthe Sigurdsson!):

Are you on Rdio yet? If not, you must go check it out right now. It’s simply THE BEST.
Here’s my Rdio profile.

What is Rdio?
It’s a badass music service that basically makes it so that you never have to sync your music to your phone or your iPod ever again. Right now I have access to my entire music collection* from anywhere – both on my iPhone and from the web or their app on any computer – and I can add new music to my collection at any time. You can connect to your friends who are also on Rdio, and see what they’re listening to and adding to their collections, and the BEST part is you can make playlists, and subscribe to other’s playlists (like the one above), and see what playlists your friend’s are subscribing to. They even have it so you can collaborate on creating playlists with others, too!

*My entire music collection is well over 1000+ CDs, and doesn’t even fit on my main harddrive, I keep it on an external drive. Rdio has most of them, minus a few super small/independent artists that are hard to find and/or aren’t on a record label.

Lucky for me I happen to have friends with fabulous taste in music, so my subscription to Rdio keeps me up-to-date on hot new bands, new releases and has filled my collection with some awesome classics, too. A number of my friends curate monthly mixes, so having access to those on Rdio (vs something I have to download to my computer, import into iTunes and then sync to my mobile) has been priceless.

One of my other favorite playlists is this Soul/Motown playlist. Funnily enough I don’t know Malthe or Zane. I must have just seen one of my friends subscribe to their playlist, and after checking it out, subscribed myself. I love the social connecting/discovery piece there, and they’ve done it really well. It’s designed beautifully, and the activity isn’t too busy or noisy.

Out of my own playlists, my favorite is one my friend Ted of BAGeL Radio put together for me, titled accordingly: Thanks BAGeL Radio! Through that playlist, he turned me on to a bunch of new bands that I love now: Front Bottoms, Little Dragon, Blood Orange, Still Corners and more.

All of this is only $9.99/mo! Totally, totally worth every single penny. I <3 Rdio!

Career Path: Hiring or Ready for Your Next Move?

Career Planning in 60 Seconds, via eskimon

I know a lot of people in the Bay Area, and with that comes meeting some amazingly talented professionals, as well as impressive startups and organizations that have positions to fill with said talented professionals. The thing is, I meet so many people it’s hard to keep track of who is looking for what position, what skills they have, etc.

Recently I created an online form to help me keep it all straight, and so far I’ve received some great submissions from friends looking for positions in:

  • Marketing, Business Development, Community Development/Manager
  • Media Production, Community Development, Media Operations
  • Communications Associate, Copy Editor, Translator (Spanish), Administrative Assistant, Customer Service Rep, etc.
  • Content Manager/Copywriter
  • Account Manager/Project Manager/Event Coordinator
  • Entry Level Marketing & Management

(Fill this out if you have one of those positions to fill, and I’ll connect you!)

And right now I know some awesome startups/organizations looking for:

  • Community Marketing Ninja
  • Senior Graphic Designer (more print than web, if you can believe it!)
  • IT Director
  • Senior Product Manager
  • Senior UX
  • Account Executive
  • Program Manager

There’s a few matches there already (yay!), but I also know the hiring process is tricky. While it’d be nice if the person I referred was a perfect match every time, I know there are many factors that go into making it a right fit.

Also, I realize it might be crazy of me to play this matchmaking game (with all my spare time – haha), but I’ve done it before, and honestly find it quite rewarding. I’m a natural connector/supercollider, and I love helping people find their next big move in life!

Anyway, all this is to say if you live in the Bay Area (SF, primarily), let me know how I can support you in your search for the right career match by filling out this form, and I’ll see what I can do!

Wishing you all the best on your search, wherever you are.

p.s. It kind of boggles my mind there’s not a website out there set up to help facilitate friends looking for apartments, jobs, etc. Yes, I know, there’s LinkedIn, but I don’t think it’s set up well for what I’m looking to do… and I’d like to go no further than 1 person away, connection-wise. Hmm. New startup idea? It needs to have the ability for people to edit it & say when they’re longer looking anymore. That’s where my form is definitely going to stop being effective. :/ It was just my attempt at getting it out of my inbox. I’ll probably keep updating this post just to keep it all straight.

5 Things I Learned the Hard Way: Tips on Inventory Management

I launched my WilloToons gift line in 2007, and over the last 4 years I have learned more about running a product business than I ever bargained for! Recently I’ve been sharing what I’ve learned through consulting and speaking, but up until now I haven’t posted anything on my site. I detail a lot of these lessons below, but if you’re more the video-watching type, you’re in luck: I recorded a video!

If you can’t see the video above, click here to watch it on Vimeo.

When I started my business, I dove in, and really just tried to figure out everything myself. I’m going to tell you the top five things I learned (the hard way), in hopes that this saves others out there who want to start or currently have an existing small business selling products.

Inventory
How much to order, what sizes, what colors… in the beginning it’s just a guessing game; albeit a fun one at that! On the first big order, I was creating my line for the first time, totally in the creative flow and felt on top of the world. Receiving all of the boxes and seeing all those tees in my garage was thrilling, but I knew it meant I was going to have to sell those puppies. Enter hard lesson #2…

Selling
eat.sleep.rock.repeat!After I had my inventory, had done my product shots and wrote all the copy for my newly redesigned website, the first thing I did was launch my online store. However, it didn’t take long before I also had a stocked Etsy store, was selling at craft & street fairs, scoring my first wholesale customer, and selling on consignment, too! Now, while I think selling through multiple channels is a great way to go, it definitely makes for considerably more complicated bookkeeping! Which, yes, conveniently brings me to my third, and possibly most difficult lesson.

Bookkeeping
Now, this is where my story actually hits the cold hard floor of reality. I detail this out in the video, but let me just say that my #1 tip for those starting a business selling products is to have your inventory & bookkeeping systems set up in advance! As designers, crafters and artists, the boring stuff is often the last thing we want to think about; we just want to make cool stuff and we’re over the moon people actually want to buy it! Please heed my warning and make sure you have it set up right in the beginning. Not only will this save you headaches and stress, it’ll keep money flowing in and give you the data to make informed decisions down the road.

Time is Money
When you’re running any kind of business, you quickly realize time is money. You only have so much capital, and since most of it is sitting on shelves waiting to turn into dollars, all of your actions need to be geared towards ROI and conversion. This is also where you need your systems to be working for you, so that you know what is selling, and what isn’t (i.e. you can’t keep it all in your head forever ;). Remember, all of this data will help fuel intelligent decisions for your next inventory order, too (See Reporting below).

DIY is Overrated
I’ve said it once, I’ll say it again: the key to growing your business is knowing your strengths and owning your weaknesses. You can’t do everything yourself, and the sooner you realize that, and ask for help, the better. That said, working with others brings its own set of challenges: you need the right tools to collaborate, and you’ve got to trust the systems you’ve set up. Once it IS set up right however, it will make your life easier, save you more time and has the potential to make you way more money.  Which is pretty much the goal, right? Besides having a blast and loving your life, of course.

Do any of these challenges hit home for you? There’s a lot to learn when you start your own business, and I love helping entrepreneurs. People have been selling products for hundreds of years now, and while there are definitely a huge new set of tools at our disposal these days, you don’t have to reinvent the wheel.

There is a Better Way!
Recently I discovered Stitch, a web-app made by Stitch Labs, and I cannot tell you how bad I wish it had been around in 2007 when I started my business!!

Stitch Labs

Stitch Labs a relatively new startup, but you’d hardly know it by how beautifully their website and app is designed. This is one of those products that make me so grateful I live in the future. Meaning, while it wasn’t around 4 years ago, I’m so grateful it’s finally here now! Given how many small business owners and crafters I know with many of these same hurdles and headaches, I just want to shout it from the rooftops. Which, yes, is basically what this post is all about. :)

Here’s a few reasons why Stitch rocks:

  • Inventory Management
Whether you’re selling across multiple channels or just one, Stitch is a beautifully designed system where you can manage inventory AND it’ll provide you with insights from your sales. Plus:
    • They’ve made it incredibly easy and super fast to add your inventory to Stitch [watch their latest new video to see what I mean].
    • Soon you’ll be able to tie your online shopping carts to Stitch for seamless integration with online sales & inventory! Game changer.
  • Reporting
If the inventory management wasn’t the most epic part of Stitch, I would have to say hands down it’s all about the reporting. Being able to see what’s selling, what’s not, and even have the ability to tag various contacts (e.g. sales channels, stores, sales verticals, regions, etc.) provides for an incredibly robust way to view your sales, way above and beyond your standard P&L (Profit & Loss report).
  • Bookkeeping & Accounting
    • Simply export a file at tax time for your accountant – or there’s also One-Way Integration into Quickbooks
    • You can track both your income and expenses in Stitch – and have all of this data factored into the financial reports & pretty graphs, accessible at any time from anywhere!
  • Multiple Users
Go ahead and bring on that intern, assistant, Merchandise Manager, Sales Rep or business partner! You can add multiple users to your account, and even set specific permissions. Oh, and you can upgrade/downgrade at any time, in case you only need the extra help occasionally.
  • Contact Management
This might be as simple as having a contact named “Renegade Craft Fair” for all the sales you do at that event, and another called “Modern Mouse”, for the one consignment store you are selling at… or you can manage a whole slew of wholesale customers. Regardless of your needs, it’s ready and really beautifully done. Not only do you have all of your contacts set up in relationship with your invoices, order forms and expenses, but you can tag them, in order to run reports based on certain criteria. See their blog post, “Tracking All Sales Channels” for a few examples.
  • Line Sheets!
For designers who have wanted to venture into the wholesale world, but don’t know quite how to get started, the fact that Stitch has line sheets takes their service to the next level. Forever I have wished I could print line sheets out of the places where all my inventory and product information is stored already, and because my line was so big, I actually never even got around to it! Stitch solves that problem like a little added cherry on top.
  • UPDATE: Stitch now integrates with Etsy and Shopify!! GAME CHANGER! :D

So awesome, right?! For those of you who want to give it a spin, you can use promo code ‘willotoons’ to get an additional 15 days tacked onto your free trial.

Also, if you’re still not sure Stitch would be a good solution for you, or if at any time you have questions when you’re setting up your products and such, just reach out to the guys (Jake and Brandon) at Stitch Labs. They are super nice and happy to help!

The Bottom Line
Running an inventory-based business is often a labor of love, and the overhead required is usually your precious time and energy. Having your systems set up so that your time and energy is spent wisely and efficiently is the foundation to make or break your business.

:::

Note: Clearly I’m unabashedly a walking commercial for Stitch. :) For those who know my business, and saw all of the work it took managing my WilloToons apparel line over the last 4 years, you’ll get why I love it so much. Which is why it also makes total sense that I’m working with them (they’re one of my Consulting Clients UPDATE: I just joined on as Co-Founder & VP of Marketing!), as I only work with companies I really believe in. All that said, I’m not writing this post for any other reason than I truly, 100% believe that every business selling products should know and consider using Stitch. Sure, it’s not for everyone, but for those that have to manage multiples in inventory (meaning you don’t solely make one-off pieces), this system will not only help you stay clear on what you have and where, but it will provide you with insightful data to assist you in making smart business decisions to save time and sell more.

My clients range from small business owners to startups, with one common thread: I help entrepreneurs find the support they need, so that they may concentrate on what they do best – continue to grow their businesses.  If this reaches a few folks out there who, like me, have been looking for a solution like Stitch, then awesome. That’s the kind of win-win that makes me love what I do!

UPDATE: Check out our new animated overview video, How Stitch Works (yup, I dug into my old school Flash Animation skills to crank this out ;):

Behind-the-Scenes with Marianne Elliott

If you haven’t already seen it, you simply must watch the third episode of WilloToons Connect. The episode features Marianne Elliott, a powerhouse woman with many titles: yogi, human rights activist, writer, world traveler, small business owner, creative collaborator and extraordinarily soulful human being (ok, that last one was mine for her :). Most of all, Marianne is someone whom I am incredibly honored to call a friend; she’s a true gem in our world!

behind the scenes with marianne elliott

The day we recorded this episode was really fun, and marked my first one where I had 2 cameras! That might not mean anything to you, but I’ll tell you, it made the end result that much more awesome. Anyway, I just posted a bunch of fun behind-the-scenes photos, so you can meet my 2nd camera-man, Brendon Patubo, and see what a videoshoot looks like behind the curtain.

And for some sweet icing on the cake, below you’ll find Marianne has graciously shared a little more of her soulful wisdom and charm with us by answering our featured guest questionnaire! Thank you for all that you do, Marianne! xo

WilloToons Connect Creative Questionnaire

As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?
Mum says when I was about four years old I told her I wanted to be either a circus performer, to make people laugh or a Sunday School teacher, because I would only have to work one day a week.

What is one artistic avenue you’ve never explored, but would like to?
Singing. Although I do chant while leading yoga classes now, so that’s a beginning.

Coffee or tea?
I love them both, but went off caffeine a few years ago so I’ve become a tea connoisseur.

What meaningful advice do you have for aspiring creative entrepreneurs?
Don’t be afraid of structure – in your work space, in your working day and week and in your business. Structure, in creative business like in yoga, give us the foundation for spaciousness and flexibility. If structure is not your strong suit, find someone who can help you with it. Maybe you can trade them some of your spontaneity for some of their structure.

What would you do with 1 miiiiillliiooooon dollars?
Can I call a friend? Because the first thing I would do with a million dollars is what I always do when I have a question about money, I’d call my Dad and ask for his advice! I’d want to use the money to simplify my own life, to help my family and then to support women and girls in Afghanistan and other countries affected by war.

How do you practice self care on a daily basis?
I make some time every day for the practices that nourish me: walking, writing, reading, meditating, yoga and drinking tea with friends. Some days that might look like a slow cup of tea and ten minutes of journalling in the morning. But more often it means an hour-long walk, some yoga and a short meditation (with tea!)

What is one piece of technology you can’t live without?
I could live without it all. As long as I had pens and paper and the ability to make fire! But I would miss my iPhone horribly. It’s my music while I walk, the shortest route to a friendly chat, my camera and my address book all rolled into one. In the New Zealand winter, I would also be a very sad gal without my electric blanket. A warm bed is a beautiful place.

What has been your biggest obstacle in living your dream?
I am still making peace with my own drive to always do more, be better. It’s a wonderful motivator, but when I let it get the better of me it robs me of my ability to truly live the dream, which is to enjoy what is right in front of me.

In the past year, what accomplishment(s) are you most proud of?
Finishing my book and getting a publishing deal with Penguin NZ is the personal accomplishment I’m proudest of.

What’s your one tip for successfully running a small business?
It’s the same one I made above – don’t be afraid of some structure. When you put some structure into your work space, your day and your week, then you have the space and the support to be spontaneous and supple.

What does ‘Creative Sustainability in Life and Business’ mean to you?
Knowing what ’enough’ looks like to me, making space for the practices that nourish and inspire me and seeing the goodness in what’s right in front of me.

How do you know Willo?
We met when Willo did my 30 Days of Yoga course.

Given the choice between relaxation and adventure, which vacation would you choose?
Both. There always has to be a bit of both. But today? Relaxation.

What goals do you have for your business in the next 6 months?
My goal is to streamline all the exciting things I have going on at the moment (new book, new restaurant, new courses, new clients) and create a business and life that feels more effortless.

What has been your favorite moment so far today?
When I was out on my walk this morning it poured down with rain so I ducked under the edge of the roof of a garage I was walking past to wait out the downpour. A woman walked past me on the way to the bus-stop and saw what I was doing and smiled. It was the simplest smile that said ’Here we both are out in the rain at 7.30 in the morning, soaking wet before the day even starts and isn’t that something to smile about?’. I loved it.

What’s your next big adventure?
My book comes out in March, so I guess being a published author!

Yay! I can’t wait for Marianne’s book comes out. Her response of ‘create a business and life that feels more effortless’ really spoke to me. This can be so much easier when you are passionate about what you do, but it will always have its own set of challenges, too. How do you approach creating a more effortless business or life? I’d love to hear your answers to any of these questions in the comments.

For even more Marianne goodness, head over to the WilloToons Facebook Page and check out the behind-the-scenes photos from our videoshoot at Teahouse Studio. Don’t forget to “Like” your favorite ones!

The World’s Biggest Summit

I just wrote a post, recapping what an incredible year this has been thus far, but totally spaced one of the first things I have to celebrate in October is that The World’s Biggest Summit is underway!

This has been in the works for the last couple months, and it is so exciting to see it unfold! If you haven’t signed up for your ticket yet (which is 100% FREE, by the way), you must go get your all access pass now. Truly, this Summit has such an incredible collection of knowledge and guidance; I can’t wait to dive into it!

What is the World’s Biggest Summit?
Well, I will let the whimsical site give you the full scoop, but I will say Goddess Leonie has put together a phenomenal program chock full of so many incredibly wise teachers, coaches and guides – many of whom I respect and adore. Seriously, my face (in the image above) is included next to two of my creative idols, SARK and Julia Cameron… swoon!

All that is to say, I am completely humbled and honored to be among the 100+ teachers, as today – October 5th, Day 5 of the Summit – marks the day my contribution is being posted.

It’s just about 20 minutes long, and it’s a delightful conversation I had with the bright light, Goddess Leonie herself, all about Creative Sustainability (à la my WilloToons Connect video series). I’m thrilled to help share the message of self-care and following your dreams with so many around the world!

Ok, now go nab your free ticket and start diving in. Oh, and if you happened to find your way to my site from attending the World’s Biggest Summit, please do say hello! :)
